Transportation Assistance Provided on Southwest Border
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that limited transportation resources are being provided to assist Border Patrol on the southwest border, according to a statement made to Fox News.
Record Number of Migrant Encounters
The situation at the U.S. southern border has reached new levels of urgency, as a record-breaking 12,600 migrant encounters were reported in a single day on Monday. This alarming figure does not even include the thousands of migrants awaiting processing in the Del Rio Sector.
Overwhelmed Border Patrol and Growing Numbers
As of Tuesday morning, the number of migrants at the bustling crossing point had surged to over 4,500, while more than 5,300 were already in custody. The overwhelming influx of migrants has stretched the resources and capacity of Border Patrol officials.
Widespread Issue of “Gotaways”
In December, officials from DHS revealed to lawmakers that there were approximately 670,000 “gotaways” in FY 2023. These are individuals who successfully crossed the border undetected, slipping past border agents. This further emphasizes the challenges faced by authorities in securing the border.
Arizona Takes Matters into Their Own Hands
In response to the escalating crisis, Arizona Governor announced on Friday that she is deploying the state’s National Guard to provide assistance. This decision was prompted by the lack of action from the federal government. Governor Hobbs emphasized the need for additional resources and manpower to manage the flow of migrants, reopen the Lukeville crossing, and maintain border security.
