Illegal Infiltration
Guam, a U.S. territory in the Indo-Pacific region, is facing a security threat posed by an influx of illegal Chinese migrants. According to Republican lawmaker James Moylan, Guam has been “infiltrated by droves of illegal Chinese migrants embarking on our shores.” The majority of these migrants are from the Northern Mariana Islands, he added.
Intelligence Gathering and Drug Trafficking
Moylan warns that these migrants could potentially be working to gather intelligence on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Guam and around U.S. military bases on the island. He also cited instances of drug trafficking involving Chinese nationals and expressed concerns about their involvement in illicit activities.
Limited Action and Lack of Support
While acknowledging that addressing the issue is a federal matter, Moylan criticized the lack of support from the Biden administration. He highlighted the local government’s limited ability to take action and called for assistance in dealing with the situation.
Hacking and Cyber Threats
Moylan revealed that Guam has experienced hacking and malware attacks from the CCP. He emphasized the continuous attempts by Chinese hackers to gain access to Guam’s military services and communications. With Guam being the westernmost U.S. soil, Moylan stressed the need to protect American citizens and military personnel on the island.
Vulnerable to Missile Attacks
Given its proximity to Beijing, Guam is within range of nuclear-capable missiles owned by China and North Korea. U.S. officials have warned that China has developed missiles capable of targeting Guam. Moylan specifically mentioned the DF-26 Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, known as the “Guam Killer,” which could potentially reach the island.
Importance of Guam’s Defense
Moylan emphasized the significance of Guam in national security and military defense strategies. He highlighted the bipartisan support in Congress and the attention given to the island by lawmakers. Moylan also mentioned the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, which authorized funding for military infrastructure and a missile defense system for Guam.
Showcasing Strength and Deterrence
According to Moylan, Guam’s strategic location makes it crucial to demonstrate the strength and deterrence of the United States. He stressed the need to protect the island’s people and military forces while maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Moylan concluded that Guam’s defense is essential for national security and maintaining stability in the area.
