Protestors hold Manchin accountable for his support of fossil fuels
A group of climate activists known as Climate Defiance organized a protest at Joe Manchin’s presidential forum in New Hampshire. The activists accused Manchin of being complicit in the destruction caused by the fossil fuel industry. In their online posts, they referred to him as a “murderer” with blood on his hands.
Manchin Takes Shelter
As the protest intensified, Manchin sought refuge in an old red brick building in Goffstown, New Hampshire. The activists claimed to have surrounded the premises and staked out all the exits, vowing to hold him accountable for his actions. It remains unclear whether Manchin is still under siege.
Climate Defiance’s Mission
Climate Defiance has been vocal about its opposition to Manchin’s support for fossil fuels. The group’s main grievances include his involvement in the Mountain Valley Pipeline natural gas project and his personal ownership of a coal company. They believe that Manchin’s actions prioritize financial gain over the well-being of communities and the environment.
In a statement, the group emphasized their commitment to resisting Manchin’s destructive policies. They called on supporters to join their protest in New Hampshire, highlighting the urgency of their cause.
White House Meeting and Disruption
Prior to the protest, Climate Defiance was granted a meeting with officials at the White House. They expressed their concerns about the dire consequences of continued reliance on fossil fuels in a letter handed to John Podesta, a key advisor.
The group commended the administration for their climate action efforts but urged them to take immediate and decisive action to end federal support for new fossil fuel infrastructure. They emphasized the urgency of the situation, describing it as the “eleventh hour of the greatest threat that humanity has ever faced.”
Climate Defiance has a history of disrupting events attended by prominent figures. Last year, they targeted speeches by Podesta, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
Manchin’s office did not respond to requests for comment regarding the recent protest.
