Department of Education Takes Action Against Hatred and Discrimination
Investigations Launched Following Hamas Terrorist Attack
The Department of Education (DOE) has opened investigations into several schools in the wake of the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas. While a spokesperson for the DOE declined to comment on the investigations, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of creating safe and inclusive educational environments for all students.
Universities Under Investigation
Cornell University, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania are among the institutions currently being investigated by the DOE. The reasons for these investigations have not been disclosed. However, it is worth noting that a pro-Palestinian protest near Tulane University in November resulted in several arrests after three individuals were assaulted.
Tulane University’s Response
Although the protest was not sanctioned by Tulane University and did not take place on its campus, university President Michael Fitts expressed deep distress over the incident. He condemned the acts of hatred and discrimination and pledged to hold those responsible accountable. Tulane University has increased security measures on campus and implemented additional training to address antisemitism.
A spokesperson for Tulane University clarified that the incident occurred at a rally organized by a group not recognized by the university. The spokesperson emphasized that the rally took place on public property beyond their jurisdiction. Four individuals unrelated to the university were subsequently arrested on various charges, including hate crimes. Tulane University has committed to fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Complaint at Santa Monica College
Santa Monica College has also been asked to respond to a complaint regarding an incident on October 19. The college’s student government allegedly denied a charter to Students Supporting Israel, a student organization. The college promptly addressed the situation on October 20, ensuring that the students’ concerns were redressed. Santa Monica College remains dedicated to fostering a discrimination-free environment for all students and denounces all forms of hate, including anti-Semitism.
Other Institutions Contacted
Fox News Digital reached out to Montana State University, Union College, the University of Cincinnati, and Cobb County School District for comments on the investigations. Their responses have not been disclosed at this time.
The DOE’s swift response to these investigations underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to protecting students from hatred and discrimination. As the investigations progress, it is essential to prioritize the safety and inclusivity of educational environments for all students.
