Griffin Highlights Safety Concerns
In a strong statement, former Washington Redskins star quarterback, now ESPN analyst, Robert Griffin III, has applauded New York officials for their decision to move a game due to inclement weather and called on officials to do the same for the upcoming Chiefs-Dolphins game. Griffin expressed concern over the extreme weather conditions that players, fans, and coaches would face in Kansas City.
Griffin emphasized the importance of player safety, stating, “You’re trying to tell me that that’s safe? No, no, it’s not safe. Not for the players, not for the fans, not for the coaches, and it’s not football weather.” He acknowledged the tough nature of football but argued that the NFL should prioritize the well-being of its athletes.
A Call for Domed Stadiums
In addition to advocating for the game to be moved, Griffin suggested that the NFL should consider constructing all future stadiums with domes. He believes that domed stadiums would provide a safer environment for players, eliminating the risks associated with extreme weather conditions.
“From this point forward, there should never be a stadium in the NFL that is built without a roof. Make them all a dome, and make it safer for the players without all these elements,”
Historically Cold Game Expected
The Chiefs-Dolphins game, scheduled for kickoff at 8 p.m. ET, is projected to be one of the coldest games ever played. The infamous 1967 “Ice Bowl” between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys had temperatures as low as -13 degrees with a wind chill of -48. In 2016, the Minnesota Vikings played in the third-coldest game in NFL history, with a temperature of -6 degrees and a wind chill of -25.
The extreme weather conditions in Kansas City, including a predicted wind chill of up to -30 degrees and heavy snowfall, have sparked concerns about the feasibility and safety of playing the game as scheduled.
Griffin’s plea for the Chiefs-Dolphins game to be moved echoes the growing sentiment that player safety should be paramount in decision-making, particularly when faced with extreme weather conditions.
