Passport Processing Backlog Eases
As travel restrictions continue to ease and the national backlog on passport processing lessens, travelers are urged to prepare early for their 2024 spring and summer trips. To help with passport applications, the Barrington post office in Brentwood, Los Angeles, will be hosting a passport fair on Sunday.
First-Come, First-Serve Event
The passport fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and appointments are not required. However, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will only be able to assist the first 175 applicants. To ensure a smooth visit, customers are encouraged to arrive early at the post office located at 200 S. Barrington Ave.
Efficiency Tips for Visitors
To make the passport application process more efficient, the post office recommends that visitors fill out their application forms ahead of time. Additionally, first-time applicants should bring a valid form of photo identification and proof of U.S. citizenship.
Shorter Processing Times
Earlier this year, the national passport backlog caused delays in processing times. However, the backlog has now been reduced and processing times have shortened by three to four weeks. Standard applications are currently taking seven to 10 weeks to process, while expedited service is taking three to five weeks.
Plan Ahead to Avoid Last-Minute Issues
USPS spokesperson Natashi Garvins encourages customers to plan ahead and start their passport application process early to avoid any last-minute issues that may disrupt their travel plans. For more information on the required documentation for different types of passport applications, customers can visit the USPS website.
Other Options for Passport Application Assistance
In addition to post offices, there are several other places where travelers can get assistance with their passport applications. These include federal Passport Agencies in major cities, local libraries, and government offices that host special passport acceptance fairs. Travelers can also contact their congressional representative’s office for assistance or utilize passport expediter services for a fee.
Lost Passport Fee Waiver
In the event of a major disaster causing the loss of a passport, travelers may be eligible for a renewal fee waiver through the Disaster Recovery Reform Act.
