Record-breaking Cosmic Haul
NASA has successfully counted the asteroid samples retrieved by the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, surpassing expectations by collecting 121.6 grams of dust and pebbles from asteroid Bennu. This achievement marks the largest collection ever made beyond the moon, exceeding the initial rubble return goal.
Challenges in Sample Retrieval
Despite facing delays in opening the sample container due to fastener issues, NASA managed to secure the black, carbon-rich samples obtained from Bennu. These samples, a first for NASA in asteroid collection, are now stored at a specialized curation lab in Houston’s Johnson Space Center.
Next Mission and Future Prospects
While Osiris-Rex encountered setbacks with rocks jamming the container lid and sample loss, the spacecraft is now en route to explore another space rock without making a stop for additional samples. This $1 billion mission has significantly contributed to our understanding of asteroids and space exploration.
