Exploring the Deep
A recent ocean expedition near Chile led by Javier Sellanes revealed over 100 previously unseen species living in the underwater mountains. The team of scientists utilized a 4K camera and a remotely operated vehicle to explore the seafloor nearly 3 miles below the water’s surface.
Protecting Biodiversity
The discovery of sponges, crustaceans, and mollusks in the region has sparked hope for conservation efforts to preserve the rich diversity of this unique ecosystem. Schmidt’s Executive Director, Jyotika Virmani, emphasized the importance of protecting these potentially new species to secure their existence.
Unveiling the Unknown
The expedition also unearthed a whiplash squid, bright red sea toad, coral spiral, and pretty sea urchins among other fascinating creatures. The team’s exploration has shed light on the vulnerability of the region, facing threats from fishing activities and deep-sea mining.
Continuing Exploration
Future expeditions are planned to further understand the biological diversity present in the seamounts near Chile. The Schmidt Ocean Institute will commence another expedition on February 24, inviting enthusiasts to witness the exploration of areas nearly 2,000 feet beneath the waves through a live stream on their YouTube channel.
