Hoax Call Occurs while Bellows is Away
In a disturbing incident, Secretary of State Bellows and her family were targeted in a dangerous swatting call while they were away. Swatting is a malicious act where someone calls the police under false pretenses with the intent of triggering a law enforcement response, often involving SWAT teams.
Trump Removed from State’s Presidential Primary Ballot
This incident comes shortly after Bellows removed former President Trump from the state’s 2024 Republican presidential primary ballot. Citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which bans individuals who have “engaged in insurrection” from holding office, Bellows made the ruling in response to challenges from state residents, including bipartisan former lawmakers.
Swatting: A Potentially Deadly Crime
Swatting calls have a history of turning fatal, with victims being killed in some cases. The seriousness of this crime cannot be underestimated.
Bellows Condemns the Swatting Call
Secretary of State Bellows expressed her outrage and condemnation of the swatting call in a heartfelt statement on Facebook. She deemed the incident “unacceptable” and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support she has received.
Targeted Attacks Aim to Silence
Bellows also revealed that her staff faced unacceptable harassment and threats following her decision to remove Trump from the ballot. She emphasized that such acts are designed to intimidate not only herself but others into silence. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude for her dedicated team and the support from law enforcement.
Investigation Finds Nothing Suspicious
Maine State Police promptly launched an investigation at Bellows’ request. Fortunately, no suspicious activity or items were discovered during the investigation. However, the investigation remains ongoing.
Swatting Incidents on the Rise
Sadly, this incident is not an isolated case. Just recently, on Christmas Day, Republican U.S. Representatives Brandon Williams of New York and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia were also targeted in swatting incidents. Likewise, Republican state Representative Kevin D. Miller of Ohio reported being swatted on Tuesday.
As these dangerous incidents continue to occur, it is crucial for law enforcement and lawmakers to take swift action and enact stricter measures to deter and punish those responsible for such malicious acts.
