Bipartisan Support Grows for Action Against Iranian Proxies
A Senate resolution has received bipartisan support as lawmakers call for a strong response to the recent surge of Iranian-backed attacks on U.S. assets in the Middle East. The resolution, co-sponsored by members from both sides of the aisle, aims to pressure the Biden administration to take decisive action.
Uptick in Attacks
Since the October 7th Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, there has been a notable increase in Iranian proxies targeting U.S. interests in Syria and Iraq. Iran has been providing financing and training to militia groups in the region, leading to a series of attacks on U.S. military bases.
A Swift and Forceful Response
Lawmakers, such as Senator Coons, argue that these attacks have earned a swift and forceful response from the Biden administration. They are calling for increased pressure on Iran to cease its support for violent militia groups and to deter further attacks on U.S. troops and the international community.
Coalition Against Iranian Influence
Iran holds considerable sway in Iraq, where a coalition of Iran-backed groups brought Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to power. While there are approximately 2,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, tensions have risen due to Iran’s involvement and the perception of Washington’s support for Israel.
Senators Demand Action
Senator Tom Cotton, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Senate Intelligence Committees, has been vocal about the need for a stronger response to Iran. He argues that the United States has been too restrained and suggests a “massive retaliation” to end the attacks on U.S. assets.
Building Consensus
The bipartisan support for the Senate resolution highlights the growing consensus among lawmakers that a strong response is necessary. Senators from both parties, including Jeanne Shaheen, Joe Manchin, Katie Britt, John Barrasso, Jacky Rosen, Tim Scott, Marsha Blackburn, Bill Hagerty, Maggie Hassan, Michael Bennet, and Dan Sullivan, have joined forces to call for action.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the Biden administration faces mounting pressure to address the Iranian-backed attacks and protect U.S. interests.
