Elon Musk Decides to Remove Block Button on X
The block tool on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, will be removed, according to owner Elon Musk. Musk stated in a post on Friday that the block button, which allowed users to prevent others from seeing or responding to their content, will be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for direct messages (DMs). Musk believes that the block feature makes no sense and has proposed using the mute button as a substitute.
Muting as a Replacement for Blocking
Muting an account on X prevents that user’s posts from appearing in one’s timeline, but they can still be seen by clicking on links. The muted user can also view the content of the user who muted them. Musk believes that muting would provide similar functionality without completely blocking someone.
Concerns Over Harassment and User Experience
Critics, such as Courtney Radsch, a fellow at UCLA’s Institute for Technology, Law and Policy, and director of the Center for Journalism and Liberty, argue that the removal of the block feature will have negative consequences for combating online harassment and harm the user experience, especially for women and people of color. Radsch believes that blocking and muting serve different purposes and that removing the block tool takes away an important tool for users.
Potential Impact on Platform and User Exodus
Radsch also expresses concern that this decision, made without proper assessment or consultation, will lead to further controversies and an exodus of users from the platform. Since Musk acquired X, he has implemented several policy changes in an attempt to redefine the platform and its business. However, critics argue that these changes have resulted in endless controversies and a decline in user numbers.
Backlash and Criticism
Viktorya Vilk, PEN America’s director for digital safety and free expression, released a statement admonishing Musk for the removal of the block button. Vilk believes that Musk is determined to make X “the least safe and least equitable social media platform.” Many users on the platform have also voiced their concerns, comparing the decision to horror movies or home invasions. Ross Gerber, an investment advisor and major holder of Tesla stock, predicts that the change will degrade the platform and argues that users should have control over who sees their content to avoid abusers.
