Investigation Needed to Determine Scope of the Problem
A recent press conference held by U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby addressed concerns regarding the alleged involvement of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) employees in a massacre. In response to a reporter’s question about the possibility of wider involvement beyond the 13 individuals mentioned, Kirby stated that he had not seen any information affirming such claims. He emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation to determine the true scope of the problem.
Not All Employees Implicated
Kirby also highlighted the fact that UNRWA has a substantial workforce of 13,000 employees in Gaza alone. He cautioned against generalizing the actions of a few individuals to tarnish the entire agency’s reputation. While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, Kirby urged the public not to discredit the good work done by the majority of UNRWA employees.
UN Secretary-General Calls for Continued Funding
Despite the disturbing news, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called upon countries to continue providing financial support to UNRWA. Guterres expressed understanding for the concerns raised by the allegations but stressed the importance of guaranteeing the agency’s operations. In a statement, he stated, “While I understand their concerns – I was myself horrified by these accusations – I strongly appeal to the governments that have suspended their contributions to, at least, guarantee the continuity of UNRWA’s operations.”
Biden Administration Yet to Decide on Funding Resumption
The Biden administration has not specified a timeline for resuming funding to UNRWA. The investigation’s findings are expected to shed more light on the situation, helping determine the appropriate course of action.
