Fiber-Optic Cables Cut in Hesperia
Officials have attributed phone and internet service outages in Southern California’s high desert to vandals who slashed fiber-optic cables. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has affected Spectrum and Verizon customers in the region. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the act of vandalism in Hesperia, where fiber-optic cable lines were found cut.
Impact on Services
The slashed cables have caused interruptions to internet and landline phone services, primarily in the Apple Valley and Victorville areas. Spectrum reported the outages but confirmed that cell phone services remained unaffected. However, the issue has since been resolved, with Spectrum spokesperson Dennis Johnson stating that necessary repairs were made to the fiber cuts, restoring service on Sunday night.
Verizon spokesperson Heidi Flato has confirmed that their customers in Santa Clarita, Victorville, and the Apple Valley experienced cellphone service outages. These outages were due to a third-party fiber cut earlier, but all services were restored by 11 p.m. on Sunday. T-Mobile also reported a small number of customers in the high desert losing service, but the issue has been resolved.
Ongoing Investigation
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has not made any arrests in connection with the vandalism case. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are working to apprehend those responsible for the damage to the fiber-optic cables.
